Ms. Vatsala joined the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) on 9 October 1975 and served the institute with dedication until her retirement. She began her career as Programmer Grade II on 9 October 1975, a role she held until 2 September 1982. On 3 September 1982, she was appointed as Programmer Grade I, serving in that capacity until 24 July 1986.

She was designated as Assistant Systems Officer from 25 July 1986 to 6 June 1989, after which she took on the role of Assistant Systems Engineer from 7 June 1989 to 26 July 1995. On 27 July 1995, she was appointed as Systems Engineer Grade I.
