Shri. V. Selvaraju joined the services of the Institute as a Junior Mechanic on 10 May 1989. He was promoted as Technical Assistant on 28 September 1992 under the Recruitment and Career Development Scheme (RCDS). Subsequently, he was promoted as Senior Technical Assistant and re-designated as Technical Superintendent on 1 October 2001 under the Recruitment and Career Progression Scheme (RCPS). He was appointed as Assistant Systems Engineer/Officer on 1 June 2011 and later re-designated as Technical Officer (Systems) on 11 April 2019 under the Recruitment and Promotion Norms (RPN). He was promoted as Technical Officer (SS) Systems on 20 January 2020 under the RPN and thereafter appointed as Senior Technical Officer (Systems) on 24 August 2022.

Shri. Selvaraju holds a B.E. in Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) from the College of Engineering, Guindy, Anna University, where he graduated as a University Gold Medalist. He further obtained an M.E. in Applied Electronics from the College of Engineering, Guindy, Anna University.

As the In-charge of the Network Vertical, Shri. Selvaraju is responsible for the design, implementation, administration, and enhancement of the Institute's campus-wide networking infrastructure. His responsibilities include planning and deploying network connectivity for new buildings, selecting and procuring network equipment, administering network services, preparing tender documents for the procurement of network equipment, internet bandwidth, and rate contracts. Under his leadership, the Network Team manages more than 27,000 wired network points, over 1,400 network switches, more than 2,000 Wi-Fi access points, over 1,500 GPON equipment, 32 servers, and networking infrastructure across more than 350 buildings in two campuses, maintaining a service level with less than 1% complaint rate.

Shri. Selvaraju has made several significant contributions to the growth and modernization of IIT Madras networking infrastructure. He strengthened the Institute's internet connectivity by upgrading the National Knowledge Network (NKN) bandwidth from 1 Gbps to 2 Gbps, then to 10 Gbps, and subsequently to 20 Gbps. He also increased the internet bandwidth for academic journals, email services, and educational resources from 45 Mbps to 90 Mbps and later to 200 Mbps. He upgraded the Institute's firewall infrastructure from 4 Gbps throughput to an 80 Gbps Unified Threat Management (UTM) firewall and later to a 240 Gbps High Availability firewall solution. Likewise, he enhanced the Network Core Switch capacity from 2 Tbps to 22 Tbps and further upgraded it to 51 Tbps with High Availability.

Shri. Selvaraju successfully implemented Wi-Fi across the Academic Zone using a Virtual Controller-based Distributed Architecture. This innovative design, unique among Indian universities, resulted in cost savings exceeding ₹2 crores for IIT Madras and provided the flexibility to adopt better networking equipment from different vendors without changing the existing infrastructure. He also introduced EDUROAM services at IIT Madras, enabling faculty members, staff, and research scholars to access secure internet services at participating institutions worldwide using their IIT Madras credentials. In addition, he implemented GPON-based networking infrastructure across the residential zone, covering nearly 1,500 residential flats.

At the Thaiyur Discovery Campus, Shri. Selvaraju designed and implemented the backbone fiber network infrastructure by deploying 15 outdoor networking racks at intervals of approximately 800 meters. This design enabled rapid network expansion to newly constructed buildings and ensured scalable connectivity across the campus.

His technical expertise also played a vital role in establishing and operationalizing the networking infrastructure at IIT Tirupati, IIT Palakkad, and the IIT Madras Thaiyur Discovery Campus.

Through his technical excellence, innovation, leadership, and dedicated institutional service, Shri. V. Selvaraju has played a transformative role in building and sustaining the advanced networking infrastructure of IIT Madras. His contributions have significantly strengthened the Institute's academic, research, and administrative capabilities.

The Faculty, Staff, and Students of IIT Madras in general, and the Computer Centre in particular, wish Shri. V. Selvaraju a long, happy, healthy, and prosperous future, along with continued success in all his future endeavours.
