Sri. V. Ravichandran joined the services of Institute as a Console Operator on 22nd December 1983. He was redesignated as Junior Systems Officer in July 1986 and promoted as Technical Officer (Systems) in December 1991 by the first cycle of review under the Recruitment and Career Development Scheme. He was promoted as Technical Officer Gr. I (Systems)(P) in December 2001 by the second cycle of review under the Modified Assured Career Progression Scheme and he was appointed as Deputy Systems Engineer/Officer in May 2011.

Sri. Ravichandran was indispensable in setting up the various clusters in the computer centre over the last ten years and more. In any such purchase, there are technical specifications that expert faculty are competent to pin down. However, when it comes to preparing the site, installing the cluster when it comes, testing and transfering over of the files in to the earlier system, it is critical that the system engineers be very competent. Ravichandran filled that role to perfection. He had dealt with vendors over his entire career at IIT Madras, and knew how to get them to do what was necessary. Invariably there is a disconnect between the undeniable quality of the international company and its installation and support personnel locally present. Ravi was the one who kept at these people till the systems came up and were verified.

Sri. Ravichandran became the de facto person in charge of the Building and Maintenance Systems of the CC as well as the HPC itself. He has trained people in both divisions who are very competent to take over, which I consider the hallmark of a very effective person. We plan to purchase a new cluster in a few months, and we will miss his advice and help greatly.

The Faculty, Staff and Students of IIT Madras in general and the Computer Centre in particular wish Sri V. Ravichandran a long, happy, healthy and prosperous future and success in all his endeavours.

Retired from service on 31.10.2018
