Dr.S.Jayaprakash joined the services of the Institute as Systems Trainee in 1977. He was appointed as Console Operator on 10th April 1980 and programmer Grade II on 25th January 1983. He was appointed as Systems Engineer on 29th July 1988 and Senior Systems Engineer on 5th August 1999.
Dr. Jayaprakash received the degree of M.Sc. in Mathematics from St. Joseph’s College Trichy, M.S. and Ph.D. degrees by research from Department of Computer Science & Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai. Dr. Jayaprakash also had specialized training in Computer Networking at University of Maryland, College Park, USA, under UNDP fellowship program.
During Dr. Jayaprakash’s tenure at the Computer Centre at IIT Madras, he acquired knowledge and expertise in various areas such as systems administration, systems programming, software development, operating systems, database management, application management and computer networking.
Dr. Jayaprakash has been the key person at the computer centre responsible for the IITM Campus Network infrastructure from its inception. He was instrumental in planning, designing, implementing, maintaining and monitoring the Campus Network and Internet Connectivity and Internet/Intranet services in a technically appropriate and cost-effective manner.
Dr. Jayaprakash has a stellar record on achieving milestones in the IITM computing history. Some of the highlights are: 1993-94- the first email service for IIT Madras faculty; 1994- FDDI ring network for cluster of IBM servers; 1994- Established the first campus wide network across 18 buildings using remote bridges and existing twisted pair cable; 1996 onwards- Design & implementation of high speed Internet link & networks infrastructure for IIT Madras on Fibre/ATM technology and then on Gigabit Ethernet; 2007– successful recovery of the VTLS library management system which had crashed and was considered by VTLS to be unrecoverable.
In addition to being on the forefront of activities at the computer centre, Dr. Jayaprakash continued to contribute to academic activities at IIT Madras. He has jointly guided M.S. and Ph.D scholars and delivered lectures on programming languages, assembly language programming and database management on a regular basis at the request of academic departments. He has given a number of Seminars/Invited lectures and conducted several short term courses for industries and other educational institutions on Networking Practice and Experience, Internet Technology, ATM Network, Software Engineering, etc. Dr. Jayaprakash also published technical papers in leading Journals such as IEEE & ACM and has made paper presentations at several prestigious conferences.
Dr. Jayaprakash has also been a valuable resource person to several educational institutions and organizations in the region. He has been a member for Ph.D. & M.S. committees of Anna University. He has served as advisor/technical committee member of several committees for Government and educational institutions. These include organizations such as ELCOT, TNEB, BHEL, NIOT and educational institutions such as University of Madras, NITs, Pondicherry University to name a few.
The faculty, staff and the students of IIT Madras in general and the Computer Centre in particular wish Dr.Jayaprakash a long, happy, peaceful and prosperous future and success in all his endeavours.
